Background
Gulveer Singh was born on June 1, 1998, and came into athletics through distance running before establishing himself in the 5000m and 10,000m. He serves in the Indian Army and has trained under Scott Simmons, who helped develop his distance-running programme. Gulveer has become one of India’s leading long-distance runners, holding national records in the 5000m and 10,000m. He is also a two-time Asian champion and has represented India at major international championships.
Breakthrough and records
His breakthrough came at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, where he won bronze in the 10,000m in 28:17.21 — his first major senior international medal. He also holds the national record of 12:59.77 in the 5000m, set at the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting in Boston in 2025. He subsequently added the Indian 10,000m record of 27:00.22 in 2025, becoming the first Indian to break the 27-minute barrier in the event.
Current season
The 2026 season began with 13:15.84 for third place in the 5000m at the Sound Invite in Winston-Salem, a mark that cleared the Asian Games standard. He then ran 59:42 for third at the NYC Half Marathon and 27:24.18 for seventh in the 10,000m at The TEN in California. The Asian champion is now preparing for the 5000m and 10,000m at the Asian Games in September.
