Background
Tajinder Pal Singh Toor was born in Kheri Jattan village, Punjab, on November 13, 1994, and came into athletics through shot put, inspired by his father, before establishing himself in the event. He studied at Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar. Toor has trained under Mohammed Suleiman and later under Australian coach Dale Stevenson. He is a two-time Asian Games champion and holds the Indian shot-put record. In 2026, he was named India’s Asian Games flag-bearer before being replaced over a kit issue.
Breakthrough and Records
His breakthrough came at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, where he threw 20.75m in the shot put — winning gold and establishing himself as Asia’s leading thrower. He also holds the national record of 21.49m, set at the Indian Grand Prix 4 in Patiala in 2021. The throw was also an Asian record at the time and secured his qualification for the Tokyo Olympics. Toor has subsequently remained India’s dominant senior men’s shot-putter.
