Miura Leads Japan to a One-Two Finish

Miura finished just 0.24 seconds ahead of compatriot Ryoma Aoki. Aoki recorded a personal best of 8:17.60 to claim silver.

Qatar’s Zakaria El Ahlaami took bronze in 8:18.13. India’s Avinash Sable finished fourth with a time of 8:21.67.

Miura’s victory gave Japan the gold medal and improved the Asian Games record. His performance also added another major title to his growing career.

Ryuji Miura’s Career and National Record

Born in Shimane Prefecture in 2002, Miura attended Juntendo University before joining Subaru. He holds Japan’s national record in the 3000m steeplechase.

Miura set that record with a time of 8:03.43 at the 2025 Herculis meeting in Monaco. The performance marked a major step in his rise among the world’s leading steeplechasers.

From Junior Champion to International Star

Miura first made his mark on the international stage as a junior. He won the 3000m steeplechase at the 2019 Asian U20 Championships.

He later progressed to senior championship competition. Miura represented Japan at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, held in 2021, and competed at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene.

He also reached the Olympic final at Paris 2024. There, he finished seventh in the 3000m steeplechase. At the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, he also reached the final.

Miura continued competing at the 2025 World Championships. His growing experience has helped establish him as a consistent international contender.

A Record-Breaking 2025 Season

The 2025 season brought a major improvement in Miura’s personal best. He ran 8:03.43 at the Herculis meeting in Monaco.

That performance lowered his Japanese national record. It also strengthened his position among the world’s elite steeplechasers.

His 8:17.36 performance in Nagoya was slower than his national record. However, it was enough to break the previous Asian Games record and secure the gold medal.

Japan Shines in the Men’s Distance Events

Miura’s victory formed part of a strong Japanese campaign in the men’s distance events. Ryoma Aoki’s personal best also helped Japan secure the top two positions in the steeplechase.

Japan enjoyed further success in other races. Kazuto Iizawa won the 1500m in a Games record of 3:36.35. Ochiai also claimed the 800m title with a record time of 1:44.48.

These results highlighted Japan’s strength across several middle-distance events at the Games.

What’s Next for Ryuji Miura?

Miura leaves Nagoya with another senior championship title. His career already includes an Olympic final, multiple World Championships appearances and Japan’s national steeplechase record.
