Ko Ochiai won the men’s 800m at the Asian Games in Nagoya in 1:44.48, setting a new Games record as Japan completed a sweep of the men’s middle-distance titles on the final day of athletics.
Ochiai took the race from the front and maintained his position through the final straight to finish ahead of Iran’s Ali Amirian, who clocked 1:45.10, and Qatar’s Abdalla Abubaker, who took bronze in 1:45.25. The 1:44.48 was the fastest winning time in Asian Games history.
The title added to what has been a rapid rise for the Japanese 800m runner. Ochiai was born in Shiga Prefecture in 2006 and attends Komazawa University. Before moving into the senior ranks, he won the 800m at the 2024 Asian U20 Championships and took bronze at the 2024 World U20 Championships.
He also won the Japanese 800m title in 2024 and 2025, making him the national champion before turning 20.
His progression accelerated in 2026. Ochiai lowered the Japanese record several times during the season, eventually running 1:43.45 on May 30 at the Middle Distance Circuit in Japan. That performance made him the first Japanese man to break 1:44 in the event and established him as one of Asia’s leading 800m runners.
His Nagoya performance came several months after that national record. The Asian Games final therefore did not produce a personal best, but it added a major senior championship title and a Games record to his season.
Ochiai had already represented Japan at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, where he competed in the 800m. His major championship record also includes a silver medal at the 2026 Asian Indoor Championships.
His personal best remains 1:43.45, the Japanese national record he set earlier in 2026. His 1:44.48 in Nagoya now stands as the Asian Games record.
At 20, Ochiai leaves the Games with a senior Asian title, a Games record and a Japanese national record already on his résumé.
