Sri Lanka’s rising javelin star Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage continued his remarkable 2026 season by edging India’s Neeraj Chopra by just nine centimetres to win the men’s javelin throw at the Lausanne Diamond League.

Pathirage produced a best throw of 88.14m, while Chopra responded with a season-best 88.05m to finish second. Grenada’s Anderson Peters completed the podium with 86.69m.

The contest quickly turned into another fascinating battle between the two South Asian stars. Chopra opened with 83.54m before finding a huge improvement in his second attempt. His 88.05m temporarily moved him into the lead and gave him a chance to finally get the better of Pathirage this season.

But the Sri Lankan had an immediate answer.

Pathirage launched his third attempt to 88.14m, reclaiming the lead by just nine centimetres. Neither athlete could improve their marks in the remaining rounds, leaving Pathirage with another major victory over Chopra.

The result extends Pathirage’s unbeaten record against Chopra in their three meetings this season. He previously defeated the Indian at the Doha Diamond League, where he threw 88.68m, before again finishing ahead of Chopra at the Commonwealth Games.

For Chopra, however, Lausanne provided plenty of encouragement. His 88.05m was his best throw of the 2026 season and his strongest performance in more than a year, marking an important return to the 88-metre range.

With the Diamond League Final qualification race also in focus, the silver medal and season-best mark give Chopra valuable momentum heading into the remaining part of the season.

For Pathirage, meanwhile, Lausanne was yet another statement victory. At just 23, the Sri Lankan has now emerged as one of the biggest forces in world javelin—and his growing rivalry with Chopra is becoming one of the defining stories of the 2026 season.
