India’s Avinash Sable finished fourth in the men’s 3000m steeplechase final at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya.

The defending champion clocked 8:21.67, recording his season-best time. However, he missed out on a medal and could not repeat his gold-medal performance from the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou.

Avinash Sable Misses Podium in Title Defence

Sable entered the final as one of India’s biggest medal hopes. He had won gold at the 2023 Asian Games, becoming the first Indian to claim the men’s 3000m steeplechase title.

In Hangzhou, he clocked 8:19.50, breaking the previous Games record of 8:22.79.

However, the Nagoya final produced a different outcome. Sable fought until the finish but crossed the line in fourth place with a season-best time of 8:21.67.

Japan’s Ryuji Miura won gold in a Games Record of 8:17.36. His compatriot Ryoma Aoki claimed silver in 8:17.60, while Qatar’s Zakaria Elahlaami took bronze in 8:18.13.

Avinash Sable’s National Record and International Career

Sable remains India’s national record holder in the men’s 3000m steeplechase.

He set the national record of 8:09.91 at the Paris Diamond League on July 7, 2024. That performance placed him sixth in the race and improved his previous record of 8:11.20.

His international career includes appearances at the Olympics, World Championships and Asian Championships.

Olympic and World Championship Campaigns

At the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, Sable clocked 8:18.12 in his heat. He broke his national record at the time but finished seventh and missed the final.

At the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, he again fell short of qualification for the final. He clocked 8:22.24, finishing seventh in his heat.

Earlier that season, Sable had run 8:11.63 in Silesia, establishing himself among the leading steeplechasers internationally.

His Budapest disappointment was followed by a breakthrough at the Hangzhou Asian Games, where he won gold and set a Games record.

Paris Olympics Final and Injury Comeback

Sable reached the Olympic final at the Paris 2024 Olympics, finishing 11th.

He also won the Asian Championships in 2025. However, his progress was interrupted by a serious knee injury at the Monaco Diamond League in 2024.

The injury kept him away from competition for around 14 months. He later returned to racing and rebuilt his fitness ahead of the Nagoya Asian Games.

Avinash Sable’s Asian Games 2026 Result

Sable’s fourth-place finish ended his title defence without a medal. However, his season-best time marked a significant performance following his lengthy injury layoff.

His gold medal from Hangzhou remains one of the biggest achievements of his career. In Nagoya, he could not add another medal to his record.
