National Junior Athletics Championships 2026 Day 4: the highlights
Day 4 belonged to the throwers and the all-rounders. Nishchay produced the only national record of the day, Haryana won both U18 discus titles, and the two U18 heptathlons were each decided by fewer than 50 points. Uttar Pradesh’s two golds took them level with Tamil Nadu on nine golds going into the final day.
Nishchay breaks a 16-year-old U18 discus national record twice
Nishchay of Haryana won the men’s U18 discus throw with 66.75m. His opening throw of 64.72m was already beyond the national and meet record of 64.09m, which Arjun set in 2010. He then improved it to 66.75m in his second legal attempt.
His third throw measured 64.70m, also beyond the old record, and his last three attempts were no marks. Vishal Kumar of Rajasthan took silver with 57.72m, more than nine metres behind. Dev Chauhan of Haryana won bronze with 55.28m.
Nishchay has been one of India’s most consistent young throwers. He won the boys’ U16 discus title at the 2023 Junior Nationals in Coimbatore, and completed a discus and shot put double at the 2025 Youth Nationals in Patna.
Haryana complete a U18 discus double through Oshin
Oshin of Haryana won the women’s U18 discus throw with 43.81m, a metre clear of Maninder Kaur of Chandigarh (42.81m). Sona Mohan T of Kerala took bronze with 42.12m. With Muskan’s heptathlon title, it gave Haryana three golds on Monday, more than any other state.
Akhand Pratap Singh wins the U20 shot put by four centimetres
Akhand Pratap Singh of Uttar Pradesh won the men’s U20 shot put with 18.12m. It was the closest finish of the day: Aryan Satpute of Maharashtra was only four centimetres behind with 18.08m. Abhimanyu Kushwaha completed a Maharashtra silver-bronze with 17.89m.
Akhand took silver behind Nishchay in the shot put at last year’s Youth Nationals in Patna.
Advith V Yadav and Muskan win the U18 heptathlons
Advith V Yadav of Karnataka won the men’s U18 heptathlon with 4,860 points, just 43 ahead of Nagar Singh Kanesh of Madhya Pradesh (4,817). Akash Ashvini of Bihar took bronze with 4,706, a year after winning heptathlon bronze at the Youth Nationals.
Muskan of Haryana won the women’s U18 heptathlon with 4,790 points. Anamika Ajesh of Kerala, who won the U18 100m hurdles on Day 3, took silver with 4,743, only 47 points behind. Sonali Das of West Bengal won bronze with 4,262.
Lal Krishna S and Ranjana Yadav win the U18 race walks
Lal Krishna S of Kerala won the men’s U18 5,000m race walk in 21:29.76. Pawan Singh Gurjar of Rajasthan finished just over a second behind in 21:30.93. Firdous Alam took bronze in 21:35.26, Assam’s first medal of the championships.
The women’s U18 3,000m race walk was far less close. Ranjana Yadav of Madhya Pradesh won in 13:58.57, 42 seconds clear of Bhumi of Delhi (14:40.60). Manisha of Uttar Pradesh took bronze in 14:56.49.
West Bengal go one-two in the women’s U20 high jump

Shravani Sanas of Maharashtra won the women’s U18 high jump with 1.63m. Ashmika CP of Kerala and Aaradhya Chaudhary of Rajasthan both cleared 1.60m and took silver and bronze.
Three boys clear 1.80m in the U16 high jump
The boys’ U16 high jump was the tightest field event of the day. Jasbin James of Kerala, Jinay Shah of Gujarat and Gulshan Kumar of Uttar Pradesh all cleared 1.80m, and finished in that order.

Day 5 schedule: the final day of the National Junior Athletics Championships 2026
Four days, 59 finals, and the gold race is dead level. Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu sit on nine golds each, Haryana are lurking on seven, and 19 more golds are up for grabs at the JN Stadium on Tuesday, 27 October. Every single event on the final afternoon is a final, and they come thick and fast: 19 medal races and field finals in just three hours and twenty minutes.
Five moments not to miss
- 16:30, double trouble: the men’s U20 400m hurdles and the men’s U20 javelin throw start at the same time. Fifteen minutes later the women’s U20 400m hurdles and shot put clash too, so keep your eyes moving.
- 17:05 to 17:35, the 200m half-hour: four 200m finals in 30 minutes, U18 then U20, women then men. It is the fastest stretch of the whole championships.
- 17:20, men’s U20 triple jump: it lands right in the middle of the sprint block, and every bound will be fighting for attention with the 200m.
- 18:30 and 18:45, the steeplechases: barriers, water jumps and 3,000m of hurt in both U20 finals as the light fades.
- 19:10 and 19:20, the relays: the U20 4x400m finals close the championships. If the gold race is still level by then, the last baton could decide it.
