National Junior Athletics Championships 2026 Day 2: the highlights

Records fell in both U18 400m finals, in the women’s U20 pole vault and in the boys’ U16 shot put. Uttar Pradesh had the best day of any state, with four golds including a clean sweep of the men’s U20 hammer throw.

Lodenge Ramu breaks a decade-old U18 400m national record

Lodenge Ramu of Telangana won the men’s U18 400m in 46.80 seconds. That broke the national record of 46.99, which Chandan Bauri set in 2015, and it also wiped out the meet record of 47.48, set by Sayed Sabeer last year.

Manas Shinde of Maharashtra, the fastest man in the Day 1 heats with 48.68, took silver in 47.24. That run was also inside the old meet record. Aditya of Haryana won bronze in 47.79.

Chuki Birda clears 3.91m for a pole vault national record

Chuki Birda of Rajasthan won the women’s U20 pole vault with 3.91m. That improved the national record of 3.90m, which Vanshika Ghanghas set last year, and it also beat the meet record of 3.80m held by Karthika V.

Jeena Basil of Kerala took silver with 3.80m, matching the old meet record. Tanishka Dayma of Madhya Pradesh won bronze with 3.50m.

Tharanesh C improves the boys’ U16 shot put record to 17.86m

Tharanesh C of Tamil Nadu won the boys’ U16 shot put with 17.86m, beating the national record of 17.42m that Nitesh Kumar set in 2024. It was another home gold for Tamil Nadu after their four sprint titles on Day 1.

Varadraaj Jagtap of Maharashtra, who led qualifying with 16.64m on Day 1, improved to 17.10m for silver. Abhishek Kumar of Uttar Pradesh was only two centimetres behind with 17.08m for bronze.

Tanu Chaudhary sets a women’s U18 400m meet record

Tanu Chaudhary of Uttar Pradesh won the women’s U18 400m in 53.40 seconds. That broke the meet record of 53.85, which Jisna Mathew ran in 2015. Tanu had been the fastest in the heats with 54.45, and she found more than a second in the final.

Sehnoor Bawa of Punjab took silver in 54.27, and Sahaya Jemima of Tamil Nadu won bronze in 55.66.

Rahul Jakhar wins the decathlon with 7,125 points

Rahul Jakhar of Gujarat led the U20 decathlon overnight with 3,723 points, and he finished the job with a total of 7,125. Abhay Singh of Uttar Pradesh, second after Day 1, took silver with 6,697 points. Aryan Prakash of Madhya Pradesh came through for bronze with 6,288.

Rahul’s score is 60 points short of his own U20 national record of 7,185, set in Hong Kong in May. It is also above the meet record of 7,065 listed on the Day 1 result sheet, although AFI’s Day 2 report does not mark it as a record.

Uttar Pradesh sweep the men’s U20 hammer throw

Uttar Pradesh took all three medals in the men’s U20 hammer throw. Kartik won with 67.54m, only 35cm ahead of Aman (67.19m), while Mohd Abdulla completed the sweep with 64.96m.

In the men’s U20 discus, Devansh Jagga of Punjab won with 55.35m. Madhya Pradesh took the other two medals, through Yashraj Jain (54.13m) and Usman Ali Khan (53.74m).

Vaibhav Bhardwaj and Tahura Khatun win the U20 400m titles

Vaibhav Bhardwaj of Uttar Pradesh won the men’s U20 400m in 47.45, almost half a second quicker than his 47.93 in the heats. Raj Chauhan (47.64) and Thanish Gaddam (47.68) took silver and bronze for Maharashtra.

Tahura Khatun of West Bengal, the fastest qualifier, won the women’s U20 400m in 54.64. Vanshika Rathi of Uttar Pradesh was second in 55.08, and Maya of Punjab was just three hundredths behind her in 55.11.

Jithin R.C jumps 7.64m for long jump gold

Jithin R.C of Tamil Nadu led qualifying with 7.38m, then won the men’s U20 long jump final with 7.64m. The fight for the other medals was very close: Ayush Yadav of Delhi took silver with 7.51m, and Dhanush Raj M of Kerala won bronze with 7.50m.

Krishan Chandra wins the U18 javelin amid an eligibility row

Krishan Chandra of Madhya Pradesh won the men’s U18 javelin with 74.83m. Pushpak Nelwade of Karnataka took silver with 73.43m, and Salauddin of Madhya Pradesh won bronze. AFI’s report does not list his mark.

However, the win has raised questions. Protests were lodged against Krishan at the Youth Nationals last month over his age, and we have asked how he was cleared to compete in the U18 category.

Tejaswini G Rao and the U14 Triathlon A winners

Tejaswini G Rao of Karnataka, the top qualifier with 12.90m, won the girls’ U16 shot put with 13.48m. Hanpreet of Haryana took silver with 13.10m, and Jayani Patil of Maharashtra won bronze with 12.33m.

In the U14 Triathlon A, Meera Bobal of Delhi won the girls’ title with 2,617 points, more than 100 clear of Yazhini AM of Tamil Nadu (2,503). Saurav Bind of Uttar Pradesh won a much closer boys’ event with 2,195 points, just 16 ahead of Rajveer Gurjar of Rajasthan (2,179).
