Winfred Yavi ended the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya as one of its most decorated athletes after completing a historic distance treble. Having already captured titles in the 10,000m (32:39.18) and the 3000m steeplechase (9:04.36), the Bahraini star added the women’s 5000m crown to her tally with a time of 15:10.18. She was pushed to her limits in her final event, overcoming immense fatigue and a relentless home challenge from Japan’s Nozomi Tanaka—who finished second in 15:11.65—to become the first athlete in Asian Games history to sweep the 3000m steeplechase, 5000m, and 10,000m at a single edition.

Rise to Global Stardom
Born in Kenya, Yavi began representing Bahrain in 2016 at the age of 16. She quickly established herself as a force in middle- and long-distance running, taking bronze at the 2018 World U20 Championships before dominating continental competitions. Her initial breakthrough on the Asian stage came at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games, where she won gold in the 3000m steeplechase, a title she defended in Hangzhou five years later alongside a 5000m gold.
World Champion & Olympic Glory
Yavi’s dominance extends far beyond continental boundaries. After back-to-back fourth-place finishes at the 2019 and 2022 World Athletics Championships, she broke through on the global stage at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, winning gold in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 8:54.29.
She reached the pinnacle of distance running at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, winning the gold medal in the 3000m steeplechase in an Olympic Record time of 8:52.76, edging out Peruth Chemutai in a thrilling final-lap sprint.
With six career Asian Games gold medals and an Olympic crown to her name, Yavi stands as one of the most versatile and dominant distance runners of her generation.
