Aichi-Nagoya: India will have Harita Bhadra and Unnathi Aiyappa Bolland in the next round of the women’s 200m at the Asian Games after both sprinters successfully negotiated their opening heats in Nagoya.

Bhadra produced a strong run to finish second in her heat in 23.31 seconds, earning automatic qualification, while Bolland clocked a personal best of 23.33 seconds to finish third in her heat and advance through one of the fastest non-automatic qualification spots.

Bhadra’s 23.31 put her behind Singapore’s Shanti Pereira, who won the heat in 23.10 seconds, while Bahrain’s Edidiong Odiong finished third in 23.56 seconds. Bhadra’s second-place finish gave her the automatic Q qualification.

For Bolland, the route was slightly more complicated. She finished third in her heat behind China’s Chen Yujie, who ran 23.29 seconds, and Ido Abigeirufuka, who clocked 23.30. Bolland’s 23.33 was nevertheless quick enough to earn a q, meaning she advanced as one of the fastest athletes who did not qualify automatically.

The personal best made the result particularly encouraging for Bolland.

The 21-year-old has developed across several athletics disciplines and comes from a family with a strong sporting background. She is the daughter of former Indian quarter-miler B.P. Aiyappa and former Indian heptathlete Pramila Aiyappa, who represented India at the Olympics and won an Asian Games bronze medal.

Bolland initially competed across multiple events before increasingly focusing on sprinting. Her development has included appearances in the hurdles and heptathlon, but the 200m has emerged as an important part of her recent progress.

Her performance in Nagoya represents another step in that transition, with the 23.33 marking a new personal best and coming on one of the biggest stages of her young career.

Bhadra, meanwhile, entered the competition with her own ambitions in the 200m and immediately put herself in a strong position by securing automatic qualification.

The two Indians now move into the next stage of the competition with momentum from their opening races.

For Bhadra, the task will be to build on a controlled heat in which she finished second and comfortably secured her place.

For Bolland, the challenge is to carry the confidence of a new personal best into the next round after qualifying through the tougher non-automatic route.

Their progress also gives India two opportunities in an event featuring some of Asia’s leading sprinters.

Bolland’s 23.33 was separated from the automatic qualification places by just 0.03 seconds, making her qualification particularly significant. Bhadra, meanwhile, avoided that uncertainty by finishing directly behind the heat winner.

The next round will provide a tougher test, but both athletes have already done what was required in their opening appearances.

Harita Bhadra: 23.31s, second, Q.

Unnathi Aiyappa Bolland: 23.33s PB, third, q.

Two Indians through. The 200m campaign continues.
