Looking beyond the USA as winners in the mixed 4x400m at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship Budapest 26 was simply a fool’s errand. It would have taken an absolute miracle for the powerhouse nation to stutter and lose this relay. In the end, pure class showed and the red, white, and blue ran away with the title.
As the reigning world champions and world record-holders, the victory felt entirely fitting. While a minor slip-up at the 2024 Olympics temporarily halted their momentum, the United States has otherwise put a stranglehold on the event in recent years. With world titles in 2023 and 2025, a triumph at this year’s World Relays, and a staggering four world records under their belt, their dominance is historic.
Returning to the exact venue of their 2023 world triumph, the US quartet crossed the line in 3:08.32, shaving nearly half a second off the Hungarian all-comers’ record they established three years prior.
Chris Bailey set the tone immediately, launching the team ahead with a blistering 44.73 opening leg. Alexis Holmes kept the engine running at the front, though a fierce 49.37 split from the Netherlands’ Lieke Klaver kept the Dutch breathing down their necks. Jacory Patterson then stretched the American advantage on the third leg before passing the baton to Aaliyah Butler.
Behind the leaders, Great Britain & NI surged into medal contention on the anchor leg. Charlotte Henrich hunted down the Netherlands, overtaking Myrte van der Schoot with roughly 200 metres remaining to secure silver.
Up front, however, Butler remained untouchable. Her steady 49.47 final leg cemented the USA’s victory in 3:08.32, with Great Britain taking second in 3:09.40, just 0.17 seconds ahead of the bronze-winning Dutch squad. Further down the field, stellar individual efforts stood out: Jamaica’s Stacey Ann Williams clocked a rapid 48.72, and Hungary’s Attila Molnar blazed through a 43.90 split, guiding their respective teams to sixth and eighth place finishes.
“The atmosphere with this team was so good,” reflected Holmes, who previously anchored the US squad to gold in the exact same Budapest stadium back in 2023. “Whenever the USA puts a team together, they put together a group they trust, people with the character to go out there and make it happen, and that is what we had today.”
