Magic has a familiar face on the global track, and his name is Jakob Ingebrigtsen.
On the opening night of the World Athletics Ultimate Championship, the Norwegian superstar delivered another masterclass in tactical patience and devastating acceleration.
The race settled into a steady rhythm early. The field reached 1000m in 2:39.77 and 3000m in 7:58.94, with Ethiopia’s Biniam Mehary, Australia’s Ky Robinson and USA’s Parker Wolfe taking turns at the front.
Ingebrigtsen remained calm throughout.
Even when he was buried in fifth at the bell, the reigning Olympic champion kept his eyes on his rivals and waited for his moment.
Ingebrigtsen Turns on the Speed
With 100m remaining, Ingebrigtsen moved out and unleashed an extraordinary finishing burst.
His final 100m came in 12.60 seconds. He also covered the final lap in 54.39 seconds and the final kilometre in 2:25.
That acceleration proved decisive.
Ingebrigtsen crossed the line first in 12:59.24 to secure the gold medal.
USA’s world champion Cole Hocker battled through traffic to take second in 13:00.05, finishing several metres behind.
His compatriot Parker Wolfe claimed third in 13:00.13, having led the field at the bell.
A Huge Win After an Uncertain Season
For Ingebrigtsen, the victory adds another major title to a season that had been clouded by injury.
The Norwegian admitted that, just weeks ago, he feared he might not even be able to compete at this level.
Instead, he produced a trademark finish when it mattered most.
With the 5000m title now secured, Ingebrigtsen can turn his attention to Sunday’s 1500m showdown against Hocker and Josh Kerr.
